His 1911 sensation "Alexander's Ragtime Band" announced his arrival to the world, while later works such as "White Christmas" and "God Bless America" transcended entertainment to become embedded in the cultural DNA of a nation. He died in 1989 at the age of 101, leaving behind a body of work that continues to define what American popular music sounds like at its most enduring.
